The Foundation’s initial efforts are focused on the SHS Athletic Fields Renovation Project creating a state-of-the-art facility for our athletes and the greater community. This project will include: installation of field lighting; upgrading the track and football field; expanding and re-configuring playing fields; and installation of a mile-long walking path for community use.
Why do we need a new athletic Complex at SHS?
Spaulding’s current athletic fields were built in 1964 and have not changed much since.
Due to the age and layout, many teams do not play home games at Spaulding. Girls and boys soccer are unable to play VPA sanctioned games because the field runs into the baseball infield. The track team can not host official meets due to the age, size and composition of the track. Softball is currently hosting games at the old Lincoln School. The baseball field is grandfathered and able to play games on the existing field in spite of the outfield running onto the track.
Soccer and lacrosse can play on the football field for varsity games. However, with football games and practices held on the same field, it is a challenge to maintain a viable grass field.
The goal is to have all of Spaulding’s athletic teams playing on school grounds with facilities fitting of a Division I school completed by 2016.
